Spreading Love Together

Demonstrating their strong commitment to community and social engagement, NBS alumni came together to raise over $8,000 through a fundraising initiative led by the NTU NBS Alumni Association, with support from the NBS Alumni Relations Office.

The funds went towards purchasing essential food packs, which were distributed to underprivileged families during two outreach events held on 8 March and 26 April in the York Hill and Hoy Fatt areas. The team initially set out to raise funds for 100 food packs, each costing around $50. Thanks to the generosity of the alumni community, they surpassed this goal — raising over $8,000 — which made it possible to organise a second outreach event using the surplus funds.

More than 50 alumni volunteers stepped forward to support the two events, contributing their time and effort to pack and deliver the food packs to families in need.

Over 30 alumni volunteers took part in the second outreach event on 26 April.

Liauw Ko Yang (B.BUS, NBS Alumni Association Exco member) shared that the most meaningful part of the initiative was sourcing items for the food packs. “I felt a great sense of satisfaction knowing I could maximise donors’ contributions by negotiating better prices with suppliers, which resulted in the ability to include more essential items in each bag, thus directly benefitting the families being supported. Giving of oneself develops a sense of belonging to a community and helps strengthen the social fabric whilst encouraging civic responsibility.”

Justin (B.ACC), who contributed to both the fundraising efforts and the food distribution event, shared, “When I saw the mailer, I just signed up instinctively — it’s simply about helping where I can.” What stood out to him most was witnessing so many fellow alumni stepping forward to serve, regardless of their career success or seniority. “It shows we’re building a society that cares,” he reflected. Believing that Singapore’s progress must be accompanied by compassion, Justin encourages others to get involved. “Don’t think, just do it,” he says with a smile.

The 8 March event coincided with International Women’s Day, adding significance to the heartfelt involvement of the women volunteers. Several alumnae, accomplished in their respective fields, made time in their busy schedules to support this meaningful cause — a reflection of their empathy and commitment to uplifting communities in need.

“As someone who benefitted from the meritocracy culture of Singapore, I think it is important to help others who might be slower in the race get a chance in life. Together we can help more people and create a wider and bigger impact on society. It is vital that everyone contributes towards building an equal opportunity society”, says Lee Shin Yng, B.ACC, Vice President, Corporate Engagement & Careers of NTU NBS Alumni Association.

Ann Ong, Deputy Director of the NBS Alumni Relations team, shares, “At NBS, we believe that responsible leadership starts with empathy and service to others. Our alumni-led food distribution efforts reflect this spirit – showing how small, meaningful actions can uplift communities and foster social inclusion. These acts of kindness echo NTU’s broader mission of nurturing socially conscious leaders. I’m heartened by the dedication of our alumni; together, we are strengthening bonds, inspiring change, and advancing NBS’s purpose as a business school with impact.”

Lee Eng Kian (B.ACC, Vice President, Community & Social Engagement, NTU NBS Alumni Association) encourages others to get involved. “Volunteering is a rewarding experience that allows you to make a positive impact while connecting with others who share your values. The ripple effect of paying it forward will prove to be extremely gratifying. Give it a shot! You may be surprised at how meaningful and fulfilling the experience will be.”
