Transition to a Green Economy: How Can Sustainable Private Finance Help?

09 Dec 2021 10.00 AM - 11.00 AM Alumni, Current Students, Industry/Academic Partners, Prospective Students, Public

Unmitigated climate change poses major risks to the global economy and the financial sector. Building on the outcomes of the COP26 Summit, this webinar brings together three experts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss the role of sustainable finance in fostering the transition to a green economy.

Beginning with an overview of the main trends and dynamics of the sustainable debt market and an update on COP26 agreements, the panellists will then discuss the main findings of Chapter 3 of the October 2021 Global Financial Stability Report.

Chapter 3 documents how the sustainable fund segment has stepped up its climate stewardship and can increase the availability of private capital to firms with a more favourable sustainability rating. Although sustainable funds have been growing rapidly, they are still too limited in size and scope to make a difference. The analysis will highlight the need to strengthen the global climate information architecture to foster climate finance markets, ensure proper regulatory oversight to prevent greenwashing, and conduct scenario analysis and stress testing to mitigate financial stability risks.
