Facebook: Billion investment in news industry

Facebook plans to invest at least one billion US dollars in the news industry over the next three years. Facebook blocked news pages in Australia last Wednesday after the Australian government said it was going to introduce a new law that would require Facebook to pay publishers for linking to their stories. Gerard Goggin, communications scientist at NTU, said: “That helps a little more balance in the relationships between the two digital platforms and the organisations that are now offering this type of journalism. I wouldn't draw the line too narrow, but I think this is a useful, anticipated measure that will help develop the business models that support journalism to give a little more security.”
