Introduction

To ground music educators with an understanding of the underlying philosophies and assumptions of music education. Approaches include flipped classroom, mobile enabled cooperative learning, inquiry learning, and online class discussions.

This course is part of:

Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning Music (12 AU):

• MUE901 Issues in Music Education
• MUE902 Philosophy of Music Education

• MUE904 Studies in Musical Behaviours

Upon completion of the fourth course, MUE903 Popular Culture and ICT in Music Education, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Teaching and Learning Music (16 AU).

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

i) Articulate a range of philosophical perspectives in music education
ii) Interrogate and probe assumptions underlying the theory and practice of music education
iii) Engage in philosophical discourse with reference to music education
iv) View music education in Singapore and internationally via a range of philosophical lenses
v) Write clearly, cogently, and persuasively on philosophical topics in music education

This course centres on the philosophical foundations of music education. In particular, it seeks to address the “big questions” that confront contemporary music education. Course readings range from ancient to living scholars and philosophers, and cut across cultural borders in its inclusion of Asian and comparative philosophical writings.

 

Practitioners with at least 1 year of music teaching experience.
