Introduction

This course provides the following insights:

  1. Understand the definition and meaning of teaching Tamil Language as a second language
  2. Understand language learning in Singapore and its bilingual policies
  3. Acquire relevant skills for the development of the four language skills, and the two way communication skills among students
  4. Study the various approaches and strategies in teaching and assessing Tamil Language learning and remedial measures
  5. Development of teacher capacity for teaching Tamil language

 

This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education
- FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education

Learners must complete any three of the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education (12 AU):

  • MTL901 Tamil Curriculum, Materials including IT: Selection and Evaluation (or MTL901A-C)
  • MTL903 Tamil Language in Education (or MTL903A-C)
  • MTL907 History of Singapore Tamil Education and Tamil Literature (or MTL907A-C)
  • MTL908 An Introduction to Sociolinguistics and Bilingualism for Tamil (or MTL908A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth set of courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education (16 AU).

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Gain understanding on the theories and theoretical underpinnings of educational and language policies in Singapore
  2. Develop a nuanced understanding of Tamil as a Mother Tongue Language, its significant values, and contributions to the Tamil community
  3. Develop an understanding of the critical role and commitment of parents, Tamil teachers, Tamil community organisations in maintaining the language, culture and literacy

Topics covered:

  1. Singapore’s educational policies and multilingual language policies
  2. Language planning policies: role, contribution and impact in educational policies & programmes
  3. Bilingualism and official languages
  4. Tamil language, and use of Tamil Language in school curriculum
  5. Research studies in Tamil Language: Use of the language at home, school and community, Census Surveys 2020
  6. Significant findings and impact of Tamil Language Review Committee Reports
  7. Making Tamil a Living Language - a cultural heritage in Singapore

Working professionals with background and or experiences in one or more of the following areas will better appreciate the course contents:

Participants are recommended to take the courses in the sequence A, B, and C as the contents of the latter courses build on the foundations of the earlier courses.
