Introduction

Testing and assessment forms a critical component of Chinese language curriculum and determines the intended learning outcomes of teaching and learning. This course provides participants with an opportunity to evaluate, adapt and design assessment practices, and to interpret assessment data and feedback gathered to achieve intended learning outcomes of Chinese language curriculum in Singapore schools. Participants will be tasked to design a holistic assessment plan for Chinese language based on the student profile and the instructional objectives of the curriculum, enabling them to be accomplished assessors and curriculum leaders of Chinese language curriculum in schools.

 

This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning Chinese Language
- FlexiMasters in Teaching and Learning Chinese Language

Learners must complete any three of the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning Chinese Language (12 AU):

  • MCL902 Topics on Chinese Language and Its Teaching (or MCL902A-C)
  • MCL905 Character and Citizenship Education and its Pedagogy in Singapore Primary Schools (or MCL905A-C)
  • MCL910 Chinese Language Testing and Assessment (or MCL910A-C)
  • MCL911 Application of Information and Communication Technologies in Teaching and Learning of Chinese Language (or MCL911A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth set of courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Teaching and Learning Chinese Language (16 AU).

Through this course, participants will:

1. Understand the key changes made to Chinese language national examinations and their rationale. 
2. Evaluate the existing assessment practices and instruments used in schools with a view of improving them to achieve the intended purposes most effectively. 
3. Interpret the data and feedback gathered from the assessment, using quantitative and qualitative approach, to improve learners’ learning and reflect on their teaching practices. 
4. Design a Chinese language holistic assessment plan for a particular level of their school, taking into consideration the student profile, aligning it with the intended learning objectives of the Chinese language curriculum.

 

1. Understand the key changes made to Chinese language national examinations and their rationale: 
a. Use of video clip as stimulus for oral examination
b. Use of non-language (pictures) options in listening 
comprehension
c. Inclusion of rejoinder item in listening examination
2. Evaluate the existing assessment practices and instruments: 
a. Language forms
b. Listening skill
c. Reading skills
d. Oral presentation skills
e. Writing skill
f. Interaction skill
3. Quantitative analysis of test items: 
a. Facility index
b. Discrimination index
c. Distraction analysis
4. Qualitative analysis of test items: 
a. Test validity and reliability

b. Two-way table of specification

5. Interpret the assessment data and feedback gathered from the assessment to improve learners’ learning and reflect on the teaching practices
6. Design Chinese language assessment plan, taking into consideration the student profile and the intended learning outcomes of the curriculum

All Courses are taught in Chinese. Participants with background and/or experiences in one or more of the following areas will better appreciate the course contents.

a. Education, or
b. Chinese Language-related fields or

c. Working experience in teacher professional development, continuing education and training or other relevant adult education

Participants are recommended to take the courses in the sequence A, B, and C as the contents of the latter courses build on the foundations of the earlier courses.
