Introduction

Character and Citizenship Education is taught by Mother-Tongue Language teachers in primary schools. Teachers have been equipped with the relevant content knowledge and pedagogies during their pre-service training. The Masters course covers a wider scope and greater depth in the development of Character and Citizenship Education curriculum and provides continuing professional development for experienced teachers who wish to specialize in this area.

 

This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning Chinese Language
- FlexiMasters in Teaching and Learning Chinese Language

Learners must complete any three of the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning Chinese Language (12 AU):

  • MCL902 Topics on Chinese Language and Its Teaching (or MCL902A-C)
  • MCL905 Character and Citizenship Education and its Pedagogy in Singapore Primary Schools (or MCL905A-C)
  • MCL910 Chinese Language Testing and Assessment (or MCL910A-C)
  • MCL911 Application of Information and Communication Technologies in Teaching and Learning of Chinese Language (or MCL911A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth set of courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Teaching and Learning Chinese Language (16 AU).

Upon completing the course, students will have a better understanding of the development of the Character and Citizenship education curriculum in Singapore primary schools and the underlying concepts and factors which shape the curriculum. Students will examine the syllabuses, instructional packages and teaching approaches at different developmental stages, and local and overseas research papers on Singapore’s Character and Citizenship education 
curriculum. 
  • An overview of the Character and Citizenship Education in primary schools since Singapore’s independence
  • The instructional programmes and teaching approaches at the early stage of Character and Citizenship Education
  • Some turning points and repositioning of the Character and Citizenship education (primary) programmes in the 70s
  • The Character and Citizenship Education (Primary) instructional packages and teaching approaches in the 80s and 90s
  • Models of Character and Citizenship Education: East and West
  • Character and Citizenship education in the 21st century
  • Chinese research papers on the study of Singapore’s Character and Citizenship Education (primary) curriculum

All Courses are taught in Chinese. Participants with background and/or experiences in one or more of the following areas will better appreciate the course contents.

a. Education, or
b. Chinese Language-related fields or

c. Working experience in teacher professional development, continuing education and training or other relevant adult education

Participants are recommended to take the courses in the sequence A, B, and C as the contents of the latter courses build on the foundations of the earlier courses.
