Introduction

This module is an introduction to the strategic roles editors play in the publishing process, and the knowledge and skills required for the development of new projects in both print and digital form. This module includes coverage of the editorial process in traditional and/or digital environments, in terms of content delivery and workflow.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an awareness of the role of the commissioning editor
- Develop the ability to apply humanities research and research methods to publishing
- Develop an appreciation of the conditions necessary for economically viable publishing projects

As with all Humanities courses, this course prepares students for a wide range of employment opportunities in Busincess, Education, Civil Service, and the arts, as it provides specific job scope considerations to supplement the writing, reading, and critical thinking skills that serve Humanities so well in taking on jobs in these sectors.  This particular course provides special insight into jobs in Journalism and Media.

Mr Yeow Kai Chai

Yeow Kai Chai is a poet, journalist and editor. A Master of Arts graduate in English Literature from the National University of Singapore, his poetry won first prize in poetry for two years at the NUS Literary Society Competition. His debut book, Secret Manta (2001) was adapted from a collection shortlisted for the 1995 Singapore Literature Prize and his second collection of poetry is Pretend I’m Not Here (2006).

Yeow was Assistant to Editor and music reviewer in Life!, The Straits Times, and currently serves the National Arts Council as Director of the Singapore Writers Festival. He is also an editor of Quarterly Literary Review Singapore. http://www.poetry.sg/yeow-kai-chai-bio
