From Operations to AI: Building the Confidence to Drive Digital Transformation

Lim Yan Han, Fiona, graduate of NTU PACE (SCTP) Advanced Professional Certificate in Data Science and AI
Without a formal background in computer science or technology, Fiona has built a successful career at the intersection of operations management and digital transformation. Throughout her professional journey, she was given opportunities to build processes and structures from the ground up, identifying workflow gaps, streamlining operations, and implementing digital solutions to solve business challenges.
These experiences ignited a deeper curiosity about technology and its potential to transform the way organisations work. Fiona began to realise the growing importance of understanding not only the business side of transformation, but also the technologies driving it.
With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and data-driven innovation, Fiona recognised the need to strengthen her technical foundation. She wanted to move beyond managing projects from a purely business perspective and gain a deeper appreciation of the work her developers were doing. This led her to the NTU SCTP in Data Science and AI (DSAI) , which perfectly aligned with her aspirations to bridge the gap between business and technology.
Gaining Practical AI and Data Science Skills
Through the programme, Fiona developed a strong foundation in data science, machine learning, and the design of agentic AI workflows. More importantly, the hands-on nature of the curriculum enabled her to connect these concepts and apply them to real-world business challenges.
The programme provided me with knowledge in data science, machine learning, and how to build agentic workflows. Through hands-on projects, I learnt how to bring these components together and customise solutions based on business needs. It also gave me a much deeper understanding of how each element works and transformed the way I manage projects, as I can now better appreciate the challenges that developers face.
Armed with both business acumen and technical understanding, Fiona is now better equipped to collaborate across teams, make informed decisions, and drive digital initiatives with greater confidence and impact.
Turning Challenges into Growth Opportunities
Fiona faced challenges throughout her learning journey. One of the initial adjustments was adapting to the programme's flipped classroom approach, which required self-directed learning before lessons, active participation during class, and continued revision afterwards.
However, the greatest learning curve came when theory had to be translated into practical applications.
Understanding a concept is one thing. Building something that actually works is another. That was when I realised there can be a significant gap between learning the theory and applying it in practice.
Fortunately, many of the assignments were project-based and completed in teams. Working alongside classmates from diverse professional and technical backgrounds allowed Fiona to learn from different perspectives, exchange ideas, and tackle challenges collaboratively.
Together, they researched solutions, experimented with new approaches, and gradually transformed concepts into working applications. For Fiona, this process of learning became one of the most rewarding aspects of the programme.
Supporting Career Growth and New Opportunities
The career support services played a pivotal role in Fiona’s professional journey and career transition. Through personalised guidance from her Career Coach, Mindy at NTU PACE, she gained valuable support in refining her resume, strengthening her interview skills, and exploring potential career pathways aligned with her aspirations and professional growth.
Mindy mentorship extended beyond interview preparation. By sharing insights into different career options and connecting Fiona with relevant job opportunities, she helped Fiona gain greater clarity on her professional direction and approach her job search with confidence. The tailored guidance empowered Fiona to articulate her experiences more effectively and present her strengths with greater conviction during interviews.
The support I received gave me the confidence to explore new opportunities and communicate my experience more effectively. Thanks to the career coach's patience, guidance, and encouragement throughout the process, I was able to successfully secure a new role.
Applying AI and Data Science Knowledge in the Workplace
Today, Fiona has secured a role in the education sector. She plays a key role in governance and systems management, collaborating closely with IT developers to drive technology-enabled initiatives. Her responsibilities include maintaining the organisation's CRM system and supporting a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) project focused on policies and governance.
The knowledge and skills she acquired through the DSAI programme have proven highly relevant in her current role. Concepts such as machine learning, AI applications, and agentic workflows have enabled her to better understand the technologies underpinning these projects and bridge the gap between business and technical teams.
With a stronger technical foundation, Fiona is now able to communicate business requirements more effectively, contribute meaningfully to project discussions, and collaborate more confidently with developers. This deeper understanding has also enhanced her ability to anticipate technical considerations and navigate project challenges more strategically.
Advice for Aspiring Learners
For individuals considering upskilling but wondering if it is the right time, Fiona encourages them not to let self-doubt hold them back.
She emphasises that upskilling is not about starting from scratch. Rather, it is about building on existing experiences and strengths while acquiring new capabilities that support future growth.
For individuals considering their next career move, Fiona’s story serves as a powerful reminder that it is never too late to learn something new. With the right mindset, support, and commitment, upskilling can become a catalyst for career growth, new opportunities, and long-term success in the ever-evolving digital economy.
