Lifelong Learning Insights in a Transforming Skills Landscape

On 24 May 2025, NTU Academy for Professional and Continuing Education (NTU PACE) hosted its largest-ever SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) graduation ceremony, a milestone that marked not only the achievements of over 100 learners, but also the growing national commitment to lifelong learning.

Delivering the opening address, Professor Boh Wai Fong, Vice President (Lifelong Learning & Alumni Engagement), reflected on the changing realities of the modern workforce and the critical role that continuous education now plays. “Career transitions are no longer exceptional events; they are becoming the norm,” she shared, speaking to a world shaped by rapid technological advancement, globalisation, and evolving societal demands.

Professor Boh acknowledged how the traditional concept of a linear career has given way to a landscape defined by constant reinvention. “Many of the jobs that exist today didn’t exist when I was an undergraduate,” she remarked, adding that adaptability is no longer a competitive advantage, it is a necessity. In this context, the SCTP was conceived to empower mid-career professionals with the skills required to remain relevant and resilient.

To date, close to 1,000 Singaporeans have participated in the SCTP. This success, according to Professor Boh, is a direct result of the strong tripartite collaboration between NTU, SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG), and industry partners. “This partnership ensures our curriculum remains current, reflects real world industry needs, and provides learners with opportunities for practical application and valuable industry insights,” she explained.

More than just delivering technical know how, SCTP fosters a mindset of lifelong learning,  a value strongly underscored throughout Professor Boh’s address. “Your graduation today is not the end of your learning journey, but rather a significant milestone within it,” she affirmed. She urged graduates to cultivate curiosity, embrace a growth mindset, and recognise the value of transferable skills such as communication, problem solving, and collaboration that are applicable across sectors. Professor Boh also highlighted the importance of remaining open to opportunity.

Cultivate curiosity, persistence, optimism, risk-taking, and flexibility – these qualities will allow you to recognise and capitalise on unforeseen events that can shape your career trajectory in exciting ways.

NTU PACE, she shared, remains committed to this journey alongside its learners. The institution continues to launch new programmes that respond to economic priorities, including a recently introduced Advanced Professional Certificate in Sustainable Urban Environments, as well as a suite of Professional Certificates aligned with Singapore’s green, digital, and care economies. These offerings provide adult learners with accessible pathways to rapidly upskill and stay ahead of emerging workforce demands.

In closing, Professor Boh commended the graduating cohort for their determination and commitment to growth. “You have invested in yourselves, and you are now well-equipped to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead,” she said, acknowledging the courage it takes to pursue a mid-career transformation. She encouraged graduates to continue building on the momentum they have achieved and to remain proactive in seeking out new learning and professional opportunities.

With 11 employers present at the graduation ceremony, the event also served as a springboard for professional opportunities, an embodiment of NTU PACE’s mission to bridge learning with meaningful career outcomes.

As Singapore’s skills landscape continues to evolve, the SCTP stands as a timely and critical initiative. The stories of its graduates,  backed by industry-aligned training and a deep personal commitment to growth,  reflect the broader movement towards a future-ready workforce built on the foundation of lifelong learning.
