FlexiMasters in Project Management

The FlexiMasters in Project Management is designed for professionals seeking to build essential project management skills for today's fast-evolving industries. This programme equips learners with the expertise to conceptualise, plan, develop, execute, and deliver successful projects across diverse sectors. Learners will enhance their leadership and project management capabilities through blended learning, towards managing projects efficiently and meeting business goals.

The FlexiMasters in Project Management is mapped to the MSc in Project Management from NTU's School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE).

Programme Structure

  • The programme consists of five courses worth a total of 15 Academic Units (AUs). 
  • Assessment(s) will be conducted during every course and learners will be graded based on their performance in the assessment(s).
  • While there is no specific admission requirement, the courses are recommended for learners employed in Project Management-related roles or have previous work experience in Project Management-related roles, so as to better benefit from and appreciate the course contents.
  • Shortlisting will be conducted for this programme.
  • Courses need to be completed sequentially, beginning with:
    Fundamentals of Project Management and
    - Management of Project Plan, Schedule and Resources.
  • Mode of class delivery: Classroom and Synchronous E-Learning

Upon successful completion, the following qualifications will be awarded:

  • A Graduate Certificate will be awarded to learners attaining 9 AUs, with a minimum Grade Point of 2.5 (which is equivalent to a letter grade of C+) achieved for each course.
  • A FlexiMasters will be awarded to learners attaining 15 AUs, and achieving a minimum Grade Point of 2.5 (which is equivalent to a letter grade of C+) for each course.

Pathway to the Master's programme: 

Credits earned are valid for 5 years for transfer of credits to the Master of Science in Project Management. The minimum Grade Point eligible for transfer of credits to the Master of Science in Project Management is 2.5 (which is equivalent to a letter grade of C+). Transfer of credits is by application and the application will be assessed and approved by the University in accordance with University Credits Transfer and Course Exemption Policy.

    Programme Curriculum

    Course title Objective

     

     Fundamentals of Project Management
    (3 AU)

    This course explores the fundamentals of Project Management, equipping learners with skills and competencies necessary for effective project execution. By delving into various aspects such as project organisation structures, stakeholder management, scope, quality, schedule, risk, cost, and contract management, learners will develop the ability to efficiently solve an array of project-related challenges. Learners will explore the role of a Project Manager and gain proficiency in project closure. Additionally, this course addresses conflict resolution strategies and human resource management principles, emphasising the importance of team collaboration and strong leadership, allowing learners to confidently embrace new roles and challenges.

    At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

    • Distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of three basic forms of organisational structure (Functional, Projectised and Matrix) and their implications for managing projects. 
    • Explain the importance of identifying critical project stakeholders and managing them within the context of project development.
    • Identify the elements of the Project Management (PM) life cycle, including plan, control, and organise and allocate resources effectively.
    • Comprehend and become familiar with the use of basic tools and techniques to plan, organise, and manage a project.
    • Apply common forms of cost estimation for project work, including ballpark estimates and definitive estimates.
    • Critically evaluate the characteristics of effective project teams and understand why teams fail.
    • Distinguish between the role of a manager and the characteristics of a leader.
    • Describe in general terms the value of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide.
    • Critically evaluate a project using the PMBOK as a framework.

     

    Management of Project Plan, Schedule and Resources (3 AU)

    This course equips learners with essential skills for effective project management, focusing on project planning and resource scheduling. Key topics include project scope definition, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Critical Path Analysis (CPA), network scheduling, resource scheduling, and project monitoring. Learners will gain the ability to tackle challenges related to timelines, resource allocation, and performance in their workplaces. This course also helps refine organisational skills, empowering learners to take on roles such as project manager or team leader.

    At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

    • Explain the importance of project scope definition and learn to use scope and requirements to create Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to actual projects.
    • Apply WBS for effective project planning.
    • Apply techniques of estimating task durations and risk assessment.
    • Apply the technique of network scheduling and Critical Path Analysis (CPA) to actual projects in the learner’s own workplace.
    • Apply the technique of scheduling resources to projects.
    • Apply the techniques of project monitoring and control as a measure of project delivery and performance.
    • Reduce project duration during a project using “project crashing” techniques.
    • Apply concepts of planning and resource scheduling concepts to actual projects in the learner’s own organisation.

     

    Project Budget and Cost Management
    (3 AU)

    Effective project costing is vital for successful planning and management across all industries. By mastering budget control strategies and cost management practices, learners can significantly minimise financial risks, optimise the use of resources, and ensure alignment with organisational objectives. This course equips participants with essential skills in cost estimation, budget management, and expense control, utilising proven principles, methodologies, and tools. Learners will discover the crucial connection between effective cost management and the identification of business opportunities within projects, empowering them to drive sustainable growth, improve project outcomes, and strategically position their organisations to capitalise on emerging opportunities.

    At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

    • Plan the process of project cost management.
    • Describe the various types of project costs.
    • Apply the common forms of cost estimation techniques such as top down and bottom-up costing.
    • Create time phased budget.
    • Perform budgeting procedure and cost management.
    • Apply the technique of cost control and Earned Value Management (EVM).
    • Explain what risk, risk analysis, risk contingency are and how to mitigate risk.
    • Apply “project life cycle costing” techniques and concepts of investment appraisal.
    • Apply concepts of Project costing and Budget management to actual projects in the learner’s own organisation.
    • Explain how organisations identify and prioritise projects that align with their strategic goals and offer the most significant potential for success.

     

    Procurement and Contract Management in Projects (3 AU)

    Procurement and contract management are crucial competencies for any industry that relies on consistency and efficiency for success. This course is designed to offer a comprehensive overview of contract and commercial relationships from a cross-industry, global perspective as it takes learners through the five key stages of procurement and contract management: Initiate, Bid, Develop, Negotiate and Manage. It will also cover fundamental principles, terminology, tools, techniques and strategies in procurement and contract management. Learners will be engaged in application-oriented assignments where they put their acquired knowledge into practice so as to reinforce their understanding of key concepts and enhance their learning experience.

    At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

    • Apply procurement and contract management processes to achieve win-win contractual relationships.
    • Apply Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, and Political analysis (STEEP) analysis to understand the market as a buyer or seller.
    • Use tools and techniques to meet the Five Key Milestones in the requirements definition process.
    • Differentiate the different types of bidding vehicles and describe the basic elements of an international contract.
    • Develop a framework for evaluating proposals.
    • Evaluate the suitability of various contract types and pricing arrangements in the context of their organisational projects.
    • Effectively plan their negotiation style and strategy.
    • Utilise proven tools and techniques to monitor contracts.
    • Proactively plan to deal with changes and disputes.
    • Apply concepts taught, to actual projects in learners’ own organisations.

     

    Organization Culture and Leadership in Projects (3 AU)

    This course offers a comprehensive exploration of organisational culture and leadership, focusing on critical topics essential for effective project management. By providing a foundational overview of project organisation structures rooted in organisational culture and leadership, learners can develop essential leadership skills and gain valuable insights for navigating complex and uncertain project environments. Furthermore, the course equips learners with the skills to tackle common workplace challenges, including team conflict resolution and management of multicultural teams, by addressing prevalent people-related issues within organisations. Through a dynamic learning approach, learners will actively engage in enhancing their leadership capabilities and proficiency in managing diverse teams effectively.

    At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

    • Describe the elements of organisational culture.
    • Discuss the importance of organisational subcultures.
    • Discuss the conditions under which organisational cultural strength improves organisational performance.
    • Recognise the implications of leadership style and its impact on team and organisational performance. 
    • Describe the traditional models of leadership and current leadership theories.
    • Apply key skills required in project management roles, such as communication strategies, team development, conflict resolution, and multicultural team management practices.
    • Explain the differences between leading and managing so as to enable the learner to be a better leader and better manager.

        Faculty and Industry Trainer

        Dr. Vidya Badrinarayanan 
        Instructor for: 
        Fundamentals of Project Management
        Organization Culture and Leadership in Projects

        Dr. Vidya Badrinarayanan has been teaching management-related courses at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), for the past nine years. She holds a PhD from NTU and a Double Master’s Degree in Systems Engineering and Project Management from NTU and Stevens Institute of Technology, USA. She also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership from institutions including MIT, Tuck, and Columbia Business Schools.

        With over 20 years of combined experience in industry and academia, she brings a strong practical and theoretical foundation to her teaching. Before joining NTU, she managed numerous information technology projects in the finance sector, gaining firsthand insights into project execution and organizational dynamics. Her international experience spans the United States, Singapore, and India. Her research interests are in the domains of Systems Engineering, Leadership, Team Development, and Project Management.

         

         

        Mr. Lim Sui Soon
        Instructor for: 
        Management of Project Plan, Schedule and Resources

        Mr. Lim Sui Soon brings over 30 years of global industry experience to his teaching. He has held key leadership roles such as Global Director of HSE, Regional Quality Manager, Manufacturing Manager, Six Sigma Black Belt, Business Process Improvement Lead, and Project Engineer. Throughout his career, he has supported operations across more than 100 locations in 40 countries, giving him a deep understanding of project execution in complex and diverse environments.

        A Professional Engineer and registered Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Officer, he is also an experienced adult educator and certified management systems auditor. His involvement in various safety and quality committees, including serving as chair/member of WSH committees, and as an executive committee member of SISO, demonstrates his commitment to operational excellence and continuous improvement.

        His strong background in process improvement and cross-functional leadership makes him particularly well-equipped to guide participants in mastering the planning, scheduling, and resource management aspects of projects.

         

         

        Dr. Felix Lena Stephanie
        Instructor for:

        Procurement and Contract Management in Projects

        Dr. Felix Lena Stephanie joined the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on 1 November 2022 as Senior Lecturer, under the Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering Cluster. She has been a part-time lecturer with MAE since August 2018. She holds a PhD in Information Studies from NTU, along with a Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA) and a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (BE) from Anna University, India.

        With over 25 years of experience across information technology, research, consultancy, corporate training, and academic teaching, she brings a multidisciplinary perspective to project-related courses. She has successfully led multiple IT, research, and consultancy projects, developing deep expertise in budgeting, cost control, procurement, and stakeholder management.

        Her work includes training thousands of mid- to senior-level managers from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Her academic contributions, including peer-reviewed journals publication and conferences presentations, complement her hands-on experience. She has also advised and mentored Master's and PhD students.
