Biography
Jeremy completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s in History in the School of Humanities, Nanyang Technological University. Using archival documents and fieldwork data obtained in Singapore, Hong Kong and Fujian, his honours thesis discussed how the career of a leading entrepreneur, Lim Peng Siang, reflected a new form of industrial modernity in early-twentieth century Asia. His Master’s thesis outlined the history of the first Chinese-owned incorporated bank in Southeast Asia, the Kwong Yik Bank, and locates it within the complexities of broader colonial and Chinese society in colonial Singapore and Malaya. Prior to joining the Nanyang Centre for Public Administration in 2021, he was a teaching assistant for the module HH1003 Asia Pacific in Global History: From 1800 and research assistant for various projects on Singapore’s economic and business history.
