Talent Strategies and Leadership Development of the Public Sector: Insights from Southeast Asia

Author

Celia Lee

Publisher

Routledge (June 2021)

Pages

144

ISBN

9780367862244

Synopsis

To stay ahead of the competition, the public sector has to ensure an effective talent management strategy to attract, develop and retain talents. Effective talent management is about aligning the organisation’s approach to talent with the strategic aims and purpose of the organisation. This book adopts a comparative country analysis, which takes into account the institutional emphasis, organisational configuration and unique characteristics of the public sector. Against the backdrop of three major stages of administrative development, i.e., the colonial, postcolonial and modern periods, this book unpacks how the talent schemes have been shaped by the reforms, experiences, cross-country knowledge transfers and evolved over time responding to globalisation and digitalisation in Southeast Asia. This book will be of great interest to scholars and public managers working on public administration and civil service reforms in Asia towards developing a contextualised understanding of talent management and leadership development in the region. China and the Shaping of Indonesia, 1949-1965

Author

Liu Hong

Publisher

Kyoto University Press (2011)

Pages

321

ISBN

9789971693817

Synopsis

China and the Shaping of Indonesia provides a meticulous account of versatile interplay between knowledge, power, ethnicity, and diplomacy in the context of Sino-Indonesian interactions between 1949 and 1965. Taking a transnational approach that views Asia as a flexible geographical and political construct, this book addresses three central questions. First, what images of China were prevalent in Indonesia, and how were narratives about China construed and reconstructed? Second, why did the China Metaphor - the projection of an imagined foreign land onto the local intellectual and political milieu - become central to Indonesians' conception of themselves and a cause for self criticism and rediscovery? Third, how was the China Metaphor incorporated into Indonesia's domestic politics and culture, and how did it affect the postcolonial transformation, the fate of the ethnic Chinese minority, and Sino-Indonesian diplomacy?

Title

The Cold War in Asia: The Battle for Hearts and Minds

Author

Liu Hong, Zheng Yangwen and Michael Szonyi

Publisher

Brill Academic Publishers (2011)

Pages

268

ISBN

9789004175372

Synopsis

The Cold War stayed cold in Europe but it was hot in Asia. Its legacy lives on in the region. In none of the three dominant historiographical paradigms: orthodox, revisionist and post-revisionist, does Asia, or the rest of the Third World, figure with much significance. What happens to these narratives if we put them to the test in Asia? This volume argues that attention to what has been conventionally considered the periphery is essential to a full understanding of the global Cold War. Foregrounding Asia necessarily leads to a re-assessment of the dominant narratives. This volume also argues for a shift in focus from diplomacy and high politics alone towards research into the culture of the Cold War era and its public diplomacy.

Dynamics of the Singapore success story : Insights by Ngiam Tong Dow

Author

Ngiam Tong Dow

Publisher

Singapore : Cengage Learning Asia (2011)

Pages

216

ISBN

9789814336079

Synopsis

Singapore's success story has been widely read. How and why this transformation came about, however, has seldom been publicly analysed and articulated. Very few insiders with firsthand experience have chosen to illuminate the fundamental public policies guiding Singapore's social and economic growth. Yet it is this aspect of the Singapore story that most intrigues outside observers. Based on his rich, forty-year experience as a senior Singapore civil servant, Ngiam Tong Dow manages to present a clear picture in this book of Singapore's path toward success. It is a collection of his speeches, interviews, and articles delivered and written between 2004 and 2010.

Title

The Chinese Overseas (4 volumes)

Author

Liu Hong

Publisher

Routledge (2006)

Pages

1794

ISBN

9780415338585

Synopsis

With a population of more than thirty million, the Chinese living outside of the mainland, and in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan constitute an important force in the socio-economic transformation of modern China, and they have also played a significant role in the interactions between China and the nations in which they reside. Viewed from the perspective of international migration, the Chinese Overseas are one of the most dynamic immigrant groups in the world, contributing to globalization and multi-culturalism on a huge scale.

This impressive collection gathers together some of the most important, and previously disparate, publications in English on the various dimensions of the Chinese Diaspora. While it includes sections on the historical evolution of the Chinese communities overseas, the focus of the selection is on the later half of the twentieth century, with particular emphasis, against a backdrop of the accelerating pace of globalization, on the twenty-five years since the launch of the reform policy in China.

Singapore Chinese Society in Transition: Business, Politics and Socio-economic Change

Author

Liu Hong, S. K. Wong

Publisher

New York: Peter Lang Publishing (2004)

Pages

299

ISBN

0820467995

Synopsis

This is the first comprehensive study of the dynamics, processes, mechanisms, and consequences of socio-economic and political changes in Singapore Chinese society from 1945 to 1965. By employing a wide range of primary materials that have been rarely used before, the authors have demonstrated the multi-dimensionality and complexity of the Chinese society in postwar Singapore, which was full of vitality and politically active. They argue that the combination of the internal dynamic and the changing socio-political framework shaped the nature and characteristics of the Chinese community and its fundamental role in the making of modern Singapore.
