​Research Project on Implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Fire Watcher System awarded Ministry of Home Affair’s Home Team Research Award 2019

Congratulations to Yan Hao on receiving MHA's Home Team Research Award 2019 for his fire safety research.

Singapore is fast becoming one of the most densely populated city in the world, fire safety for high rise buildings is a major concern and SCDF has been stepping up with new initiatives and public education. A key national initiative is to install smoke detectors in new HDB flats to enhance civilian fire safety. New false fire detection challenge emerges as more quick-responding smoke detectors in tricky events such as household cooking, cigarette smoke and other household activities desiring heat.

Tan Yan Hao, Graduate Research Officer from MAE, has taken the lead with a team of MAE FYP students to mimic a typical industrial fire watcher, who provide fire protection in similar tricky events such as welding and flame cutting. The overall automation research seeks to enable deeper SCDF emergency resource optimization through innovative use of emerging technologies. These technologies include building sensor fusion, unmanned systems and AI. With Heng Ming Ji, graduating FYP-URECA student, Yan Hao successfully developed NTU MAE's latest algorithm based in AI across various experiments to complement existing fire detection technologies towards new fire safety enhancements.
