Upskilling with Purpose: Joanna Chua’s Journey in Data Science

For Joanna Chua Hui Xin, pursuing a part-time Master of Science in Data Science from the College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS) was a purposeful move to bridge a knowledge gap in her professional journey. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at NTU, Joanna transitioned from laboratory benchwork into a bioinformatics role – a shift that highlighted the need for stronger data handling skills.

“I realised there were knowledge gaps I needed to address,” she shares. “Understanding statistical modelling, machine learning algorithms, and data manipulation became essential for extracting meaningful insights.” These were not part of her original training, which made structured upskilling even more important.

“The skills are immediately applicable to my work,” Joanna says. “At the same time, undertaking this Master’s serves as a clear demonstration to my current and future employers of my determination and discipline in upskilling and fostering professional growth.”

While her focus remains on biological datasets, Joanna values the versatility of her new skillset. “Data science skills are highly transferable and will remain relevant across industries. That offers flexibility and diverse opportunities in the long term.”

Balancing part-time studies with full-time work presented its share of challenges. What helped Joanna stay the course was the knowledge that each lesson had immediate impact. “Knowing that the effort I put into my studies would directly translate into improved performance and greater insights at work kept me focused and committed,” she says.

Looking back, Joanna highlights two major takeaways: resilience and community. "No matter how overwhelming a challenge might feel in the moment, whether it was a quiz, a demanding project deadline, or a high-weightage project presentation, just persevere on and it will eventually subside." This mindset helped her navigate the inevitable pressures of balancing studies with work.

Classmates made a big difference. "After a full workday, diving into late-night assignments and project discussions was often exhausting. Having groupmates who were focused and disciplined made all the difference. They were patient and genuinely willing to explain complex concepts I struggled with, and their commitment ensured our discussions remained purposeful and effective." Joanna valued not just their knowledge but the sense of shared purpose that kept everyone on track.

Alongside encouragement from those around her, she credits what she calls "a touch of foolhardiness" and her ability to stay disciplined for getting her through.

She also appreciated the human side of the programme, including a moment of unexpected encouragement from a professor: “You should go on a holiday!” It came at just the right time and reminded her to prioritise well-being amidst pressure.

“Ultimately, with a combination of encouragement from those around me, self-discipline, and a touch of foolhardiness, I managed to stay focused and complete the program.”

Now that she has graduated, Joanna continues to apply what she’s learned at work. More than technical skills, the experience has sharpened her time management, discipline, and ability to collaborate; qualities she calls “essential in my professional journey.”

By investing in growth and pushing through the challenges, Joanna has laid a strong foundation for what comes next.
