Learning by Doing: CCDS Students Explore Real-World AI Applications with BytePlus

Over 130 NTU students took their AI learning beyond the classroom on Thursday evening, 28 August, at a hands-on workshop with BytePlus, a ByteDance company. Guided by industry engineers, they experimented with real-world tools, tested live systems, and saw how concepts from their coursework power the technologies behind everyday digital platforms. From Textbook to Real-World AI
Students across undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programmes; many from the College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS); explored applications such as personalisation, computer vision, and recommendation systems. A live demo of BytePlus’s recommendation engine was a highlight of the session, demonstrating how algorithms deliver personalised experiences at scale.
Far from passive observers, students rolled up their sleeves with the BytePlus Console. They trialled real-world scenarios, stress-tested how recommendation systems respond, and challenged engineers with questions drawn from their own coursework. The hands-on exchanges gave them a sharper understanding of what it takes to design and deploy AI responsibly.
Pathways Beyond the Workshop
The session also set the stage for future collaboration. BytePlus expressed interest in internships, joint projects, and follow-up tech talks that would connect NTU students with industry mentors and real-world challenges. For participants, the workshop was more than a single evening – it opened tangible pathways to career-building opportunities.
Connecting Campus and Industry
Organised by NTU’s Career & Attachment Office (CAO), the event provided students the space and opportunity to focus fully on engaging with AI in practice. By bringing BytePlus on campus, CAO created a direct bridge between academic training and industry innovation; and for CCDS students, it reinforced that AI is not only a subject to study, but a field they can actively shape and lead in.
