Wang Gungwu: Beijing has no ambition to lead the world; Chan Heng Chee: Why not lead if given the chance?

Two of Singapore’s most prominent scholars exchanged differing views on whether China aspires to global leadership at a new book launch hosted by NTU COHASS Dean Prof Joseph Liow. Prof Wang Gungwu believes that China has neither the ambition nor interest to become a world leader. He said Beijing prefers to focus internally, aiming to “make China greater.” In contrast, Ambassador Chan Heng Chee argued that China would naturally seek global leadership if the opportunity arose.
