US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Manila ahead of the planned September summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, with both sides seeking to advance cooperation while managing differences over trade, Taiwan, and the South China Sea despite renewed tensions over U.S. election interference allegations. NTU Assoc Prof Dylan Loh said that the South China Sea will remain a key source of friction, making it essential for both countries to prevent disputes from escalating.
