US tariff threats aim to maximize pressure on Beijing
US President Donald Trump has been inconsistent about whether he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of this month. According to analysts, Trump’s latest tariff threat is a maximum pressure tactic in response to Beijing’s recent actions. However, experts note that the US-China trade negotiations have not yet reached their final stage, and a Trump-Xi meeting still remains possible. Assoc Prof Dylan Loh from NTU said Trump’s move was intended to retaliate against what Washington perceives as hostile actions by Beijing through extreme pressure measures.
