Trump urges China to send naval vessels to Strait of Hormuz; expert says response unlikely
US President Donald Trump has called on China and other countries to send naval vessels to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has reportedly blocked. However, experts say China is unlikely to participate and will continue taking a cautious approach. Assoc Prof Dylan Loh from NTU’s Public Policy and Global Affairs programme said China has responded to the Iran situation with restraint, criticising military strikes on Iran while avoiding direct criticism of Trump. He said: “If China joins the US-led escort coalition, it would be in a difficult position, given that it has already criticised the US military strikes.”
