To all the picklers out there: Patience, the game’s going your way

The staccato beat of paddles against plastic balls has drawn the ire of residents across the island, who complain that the sport is too noisy.  Fights have broken out between irate residents and pickleball players – who call themselves “picklers” – and complaints have been made to MPs and town councils. But telling irate residents to grit their teeth and bear it is not any way to build good neighbourliness. Instead, social scientist, Asst Prof Nurul Amillin Hussain from NTU suggests reframing how we see pickleball and the noise it causes. On ST’s The Usual Place podcast, she said it could be unfair to ban pickleball from housing estates because it is still relatively new and residents are learning to live with it.
