Young, old, single, divorced: The many faces of Singapore’s one-person households

According to the Singapore Department of Statistics, there were around 247,900 one-person households in 2025, making up around 16.7 per cent of overall resident households last year. This is up from around 146,000 one-person households in 2015, or about 11.9 per cent of the overall resident households then. The growth of this demographic will have broad implications for society. As Asst Prof Yeow Hwee Chua from NTU’s SSS noted, one-person households now make up roughly one in six resident households, which is a large enough group to have implications for housing, caregiving and social policy.
