Thai and Cambodian representatives meet in Shanghai; Analysis: China and the US compete for influence in Southeast Asia

On July 30, China, Cambodia, and Thailand held an informal meeting in Shanghai, during which Cambodia and Thailand reaffirmed their commitment to a ceasefire agreement. NTU Asst Prof Dylan Loh from the PPGA programme expressed mixed feelings about the US and China openly mediating the Cambodia-Thailand dispute. He said that major powers' involvement in Southeast Asian affairs may undermine ASEAN's centrality, but if ASEAN lacks the ability to independently handle crises, it has no other choice.
