Singapore must look beyond prices to address rising healthcare costs

Expanding fee benchmarks at private hospitals could improve price transparency and yield modest savings, but deeper reforms are needed to address rising healthcare costs, experts said. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung recently announced plans to benchmark more private hospital charges, including surgeon and inpatient fees. NTU Asst Prof Ashkar Saxena noted that while patients undergoing simple, benchmarked procedures may see slight savings, those needing complex care could face higher costs if hospitals shift charges elsewhere. He added that benchmarking is a useful transparency tool but must be paired with insurance reforms and stronger preventive health measures to tackle unsustainable cost escalation.
