Singapore is now a super-aged society
Singapore has officially become a super-aged society, with more than 21 per cent of the citizen population aged 65 and older. Sociologists who spoke to The Straits Times warned that social dynamics could also change as Singaporeans above 65 form a growing part of the electorate and have a larger say at the polls. NTU assistant professor of sociology Shannon Ang cited the concept of a gerontocracy, where a society is led by people much older than the general population. While this has not played out in Singapore, Ang said there is a small chance that the needs and interests of older people are amplified above those of the younger generation.
