6,000 people in Singapore embrace retro role-play – What has been “revived” in this cultural Renaissance?

On the first weekend of February, Fort Canning Hill transformed into a lively medieval scene as some 6,000 people gathered for Ren Faire SG, donning cloaks, elf ears, and armour. NTU social psychologist and cultural sociologist Assoc Prof James Patrick Williams sees this not as a revival but part of ongoing global cultural circulation. He adds that cosplay is a form of visual expression tied to social acceptance; people are more inclined to participate when such practices are embraced by those around them.
