More Than 130 Pre-University Students Explore "Singapore – A Liveable City?" at the NTU Social Science Challenge 2026

More than 130 pre-university students from across Singapore came together for the NTU Social Science Challenge (SSC) 2026, a three-part programme held on 30 May, 27 June and 18 July 2026.

Organised by the NTU School of Social Sciences (SSS) Club in collaboration with the NTU Asian School of the Environment Club, SSC 2026 challenged participants to explore the theme, "Singapore – A Liveable City?" Through an interdisciplinary lens, students examined how the social sciences and environmental studies can help shape Singapore's future through evidence-based policymaking, sustainability, and community engagement.

Throughout the programme, participants took part in masterclasses, networking sessions, mentorship opportunities, campus experiences and site visits, encouraging them to think critically about the social, economic and environmental dimensions of creating a liveable city.

A key highlight was four thematic learning experiences that brought the challenge theme to life:

• Competitive Economy – A visit to the Singapore Maritime Gallery to explore how policy, innovation and global trade strengthen Singapore's maritime competitiveness.
  
• Sustainable Environment – A visit to the Sustainable Singapore Gallery to discover Singapore's sustainability journey and collective efforts towards a greener future.
  
• High Quality of Life – An immersive experience at the Singapore City Gallery, where participants learnt how thoughtful urban planning supports a liveable city.
  
• Supporting Systems – A Human Library in collaboration with Catalyst Now, where participants engaged in meaningful conversations with Jack Sim, Tripti Bhadauriya, Pushkar Pradhan and Sumathy Krishnan on empathy, inclusion and social impact.

The Challenge culminated on 18 July, with teams presenting innovative policy proposals inspired by the knowledge and experiences gained throughout the programme.
