Shoigu: Russia and China can sever the heads of the militaristic hydra
Russia’s Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu told China’s top diplomat Wang Yi that Moscow and Beijing have ample experience in “cutting off the heads of the rising militarist Hydra,” a remark seen as strong support for China amid strained China-Japan relations over the Taiwan Strait. NTU’s Assoc Prof Dylan Loh noted that China has many tools to counter Japan and that Shoigu’s tough statement is both a show of support for Beijing and a warning to Japan. He noted that the comments signal China and Russia’s commitment to aligning on issues involving core interests, showing that the so-called “reverse Nixon strategy” remains merely hypothetical.
