Second S$900 million support package targets lower-income households and hawkers

Singapore’s second S$900 million support package is aimed at helping lower-income households, hawkers and businesses cope with cost pressures arising from the continuing Middle East conflict. Asst Prof Chua Yeow Hwee, an economist from NTU’s Department of Economics, discussed how the measures could cushion the impact of higher energy and operating costs on groups with less capacity to absorb price increases. The targeted approach directs support towards households and smaller businesses most affected by rising expenses, rather than providing broad-based assistance across the economy. He also examined what the package indicated about Singapore’s economic outlook, as policymakers sought to manage near-term inflationary pressures while supporting vulnerable groups and maintaining broader fiscal discipline.
