Panama withdraws from the Belt and Road Initiative; Scholars: China turns to ‘small but beautiful’ projects, impact of "withdrawal" not expected to be significant

Panama has withdrawn from China's Belt and Road initiative (BRI) under pressure from the United States. NTU’s Asst Prof Dylan Loh believes that Panama's withdrawal has a small impact on the Belt and Road Initiative. China has significantly reduced the scale of the BRI over the past few years, shifting from the initial large-scale expansion to ‘small and beautiful’ projects that focus more on refinement, sustainability and high-quality development.
