Synergizing online and offline social participation to advance health and digital research among older adults - MOE Academic Research Fund (AcRF) Tier 2 grant

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Shannon Ang, who has been awarded a Ministry of Education (MOE) Academic Research Fund (AcRF) Tier 2 grant. His awarded project, “Synergizing online and offline social participation to advance health and digital research among older adults,” seeks to understand the factors that drive online social participation among older adults, and how their online-offline mix of social activities shape their health outcomes. At the same time, the project aims to establish if biases in online non-probability samples of older adults can be reasonably corrected for using information about their social participation.

Shannon joined SSS in June 2020, after completing his PhD in Sociology at the University of Michigan, under the HASS International PhD Scholarship (HIPS). This study to understand how older adults mix online and offline ways to stay socially connected in a time when digital communication technologies have proliferated stems from Shannon’s interests in social gerontology, social connectedness, health and demography, and his training in statistics.
