By mid-2024, diabetes patients and their caregivers can take advantage of the WellFeet app, which aims to help them avoid serious complications such as foot ulcers due to the disease. The WellFeet app helps patients monitor their medication intake, lifestyle and diet. It also offers tips and reminders and a chatbot for patients to identify symptoms or signs of illness. The application aims to prevent diabetic foot ulcers, which occur in a third of patients with the disease. Such ulcers can lead to limb amputation. The app, developed by NTU, will be available in four major local languages. "There are an increasing number of patients, and because of that, they must attend medical appointments. And their carers must attend those appointments," said Dr Liew Huiling, an endocrinologist at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. "So, the application allows them to access and review information and provide them with health-related reminders from time to time. It reinforces the learning process and causes changes in their behaviour," NTU SSS and LKCMedicine Assoc Prof Andy Ho added.
