Leading with Wisdom, Integrity, and Purpose: Highlights from Convocation 2026

At this year's Convocation, the NTU School of Social Sciences was honoured to welcome Dr Noeleen Heyzer as our Guest Speaker - an internationally respected diplomat, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General, and one of Asia's foremost advocates for peace, sustainable development, and inclusive leadership.

Drawing on decades of experience in global diplomacy and international development, Dr Heyzer inspired our graduates to embrace the responsibilities of leadership in a rapidly changing world. As they step into a future shaped by artificial intelligence, climate change, and growing global uncertainty, she reminded them that while knowledge and innovation matter, wise and ethical leadership matters even more.

In her address, Dr Heyzer shared three guiding principles for navigating an increasingly complex world: cultivate wisdom beyond knowledge, anchor leadership in ethics and integrity, and build bridges in an age of division. She encouraged graduates to listen with empathy, lead with courage, and remain committed to collaboration in addressing society's greatest challenges.

Her message reflects the very essence of the social sciences - understanding that behind every policy is a person, behind every statistic is a human story, and that meaningful progress is built on compassion, cooperation, and shared purpose.

As our graduates embark on the next chapter of their journey, Dr Heyzer's call to pursue excellence with integrity, build bridges where others build walls, and shape a future that is more just, inclusive, and humane will remain a lasting source of inspiration.
