Is China getting better at countering the US?

In an op-ed, Assoc Prof Dylan Loh from the NTU Public Policy and Global Affairs programme writes about how China has become more sophisticated in managing the US, shifting from a reactive posture to a more proactive strategy that combines retaliation, economic resilience and diplomatic manoeuvring. It is reducing dependence on US technology, finance and commodities while expanding legal tools to counter sanctions and export controls. More broadly, Beijing is using US retrenchment to deepen its influence in the Global South and build alternative institutions and networks less dependent on Washington.
