Identity politics will damage society in the long run: Chee Hong Tat

Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat cautioned against the rise of identity politics and the mixing of race or religion with politics, stressing that it could harm society, especially minority groups, despite short-term appeal. Speaking at the OnePeople.sg–IPS Community Leaders’ Conference 2025 on Oct 25, he highlighted the need to preserve racial and religious harmony. A study presented at the event found that younger Singaporeans are more open to diversity and more willing to engage on issues of race and religion, with NTU undergraduate Tanmayee Kulkarni noting that more young people are aware of racial and religious issues but added that some older people are also proactive in understanding their role in maintaining harmony.
