Not just cheap labour: The case for greater integration of Singapore’s migrant workers
Work permit holders make up about a fifth of the total population here yet are still largely seen as outsiders. Experts say it is important to re-examine Singaporeans' relationship with migrant workers. Assoc Prof Laavanya Kathiravelu from the department of sociology and human geography at the University of Oslo who concurrently holds a position at NTU said that having migrant worker dormitories and recreation centres at the edges of the island or in less accessible places means that the men don’t interact with Singaporeans regularly.
