Exploring the Connection Between Geopolitics and Domestic Political Perspectives

How closely are geopolitics and domestic political ideologies intertwined? Do politically progressive Thais lean towards pro-U.S. sentiments, while conservative Thais support China more significantly? A recent study by Petra Alderman, Duncan McCargo, Alfred Gerstl, and James Icovocci, based on a 2022 survey, reveals a nuanced relationship between liberal domestic attitudes and affinity for the United States. Interestingly, the findings also indicate that conservative political views do not necessarily equate to support for China. Therefore, interpreting election results in Thailand as straightforward victories for one global power or another can be misleading.

Talking Thai Politics brings crafted conversations about the politics of Thailand to a global audience. Created by the Generation Thailand project at Nanyang Technological University, the podcast is co-hosted by Professor Duncan McCargo and Chayata Sripanich.
