G7 plans to strengthen supply of key minerals to reduce dependence on China; Analysis: It is difficult to get shake off China's dominance in the short term

The G7 is working to strengthen its supply of critical minerals and reduce dependence on China, a move analysts interpret as part of a broader “de-risking” strategy. However, experts note that achieving this in the short term is difficult, and punitive tariffs or trade restrictions could trigger retaliation from Beijing.  Asst Prof Dylan Loh from NTU PPGA said the G7’s actions reflect a clear shift towards diversification rather than decoupling, given the complexity of global supply chains.
