The value of developing deep work capacity

In this column by NTU sociology PhD student Zhang Li Jian (transliteration), he discussed how in today’s digital age, constant notifications and social media foster an illusion of productivity while eroding our ability to focus. Open offices and instant messaging reinforce a culture of busyness, trapping us in shallow tasks. To cultivate deep work, we must create structured routines and clear shutdown habits to protect our attention and allow mental recovery. To thrive as an efficient knowledge worker, one must establish a focused work model under the new economy and rediscover the value of work and the meaning of life admist the flood of information.
