Exploring What Makes Climate Policy Work: Insights from Professor David Vogel

The NTU School of Social Sciences recently hosted Professor David Vogel, Soloman Lee Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Business Ethics at the Haas School of Business and Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley, for a research talk on the political and institutional factors behind successful climate policymaking.

A leading scholar in environmental regulation and public policy, Professor Vogel has authored nine books and numerous articles on environmental governance, consumer regulation, and sustainability. His contributions to the field have been recognised through lifetime achievement awards from both the European Consortium for Political Research and the American Political Science Association.

Professor Vogel shared that successful climate policies often focus on specific sectors, deliver tangible public benefits beyond climate objectives, and are designed in ways that secure broad political and industry support. These lessons, he noted, offer valuable insights for policymakers navigating the challenges of climate action in complex political environments.

The event was attended by NTU President Professor Ho Teck Hua and Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, Professor Jon Wilson, alongside faculty, researchers, and students. The engaging discussion highlighted the importance of evidence-based research and interdisciplinary dialogue in addressing global environmental challenges.
