Climate Connections: Is the fossil fuels phase-out dream realistic?
What are the real challenges behind finding an equitable solution to balance out our needs and those whose livelihoods depend on the fossil fuel industry, versus the longer term goal of protecting Mother Earth? On this episode of Climate Connections, MoneyFM speaks to Dr Swati Sharma, Lecturer at NTU’s School of Social Sciences, to see whether the complete phase-out of fossil fuels is a realistic dream. Considering how the world is dependent on fossil fuels to meet energy meets, a complete halt of fossil fuel production now will disrupt lives substantially. Numbers of 2022 show that 80 per cent of the global electricity production was from fossil fuel – coal, oil and gas. She adds that the dream is possible, but it depends on how willing countries are to implement policies that encourage the move towards renewable energy sources. It won’t happen overnight, but it will take time and the costs of businesses will become more expensive, which eventually get passed on to the consumers, she added.
