The number of citizens aged 80 and above has reached 145,000, a 60% increase in the past 10 years

Singapore’s ageing population is expanding rapidly, with citizens aged 80 and above rising 60% from 91,000 in 2015 to 145,000 today. NTU Social Sciences Asst Prof Shannon Ang noted that smaller family sizes could intensify the burden of elderly care on younger generations, further discouraging childbearing and worsening the low fertility rate. He stressed that caring for both the elderly and children should be seen as a collective responsibility, suggesting more intergenerational interaction and education reforms such as smaller class sizes to better support children’s holistic needs.
