China and U.S. Foreign Ministers Speak Again After Two Months; Experts : Paving the Way for Xi–Trump Meeting

Two months after their meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held another phone conversation on Wednesday. China described the call as “timely, necessary, and productive.” Experts interviewed noted that the conversation is likely a prelude to the start of top-level diplomacy between the two countries, setting the tone and conditions for a potential Xi–Trump meeting.

Dylan Loh, Associate Professor at NTU, said that while the latest call between the two foreign ministers did not yield concrete outcomes, it carries clear symbolic significance and can be seen as “a small but positive step forward.”
