China-US tariff truce extended for another 90 Days; expected to pave way for Xi–Trump meeting in the coming months

As widely anticipated, China and the US on Tuesday again extended their tariff truce by 90 days, giving both sides more time to resolve trade and economic differences, and paving the way for a meeting between the two countries’ leaders in the second half of this year. Experts believe venues for a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump include Malaysia, South Korea, and China. Asst Prof Dylan Loh from NTU’s Public Policy and Global Affairs programme said he does not rule out the possibility that if another national security incident - similar to the 2023 case of a Chinese balloon drifting into US airspace - were to occur, the Xi–Trump meeting could be called off entirely.
