Xi hosts Putin after Trump visit, signalling China’s balancing act between Washington and Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Beijing for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, in a visit seen as a pointed signal that China’s efforts to steady relations with the United States will not come at the expense of its partnership with Moscow. Analysts have also linked Mr Putin’s visit to the recent movement in US-China relations. Hoo Tiang Boon, a professor at NTU, told Lianhe Zaobao that the visit sent a message that China’s improving ties with the US did not mean Beijing would damage its relationship with Russia. He said the summit would allow China and Russia to reaffirm their strategic relationship, while also helping Beijing demonstrate its diplomatic influence.
