China proposes huge Investment in the US in exchange for lifting national security restrictions on Chinese companies
China has reportedly proposed a large-scale investment in the US in exchange for the removal of national security restrictions on Chinese companies' investments in the US and a reduction in tariffs on products imported from Chinese-funded factories in the US. According to Bloomberg, sources revealed that Chinese trade negotiators made this proposal during talks in Madrid last month. Assoc Prof Dylan Loh from NTU said that China's request for the US to ease investment restrictions on Chinese companies in the US is likely part of the TikTok deal. Assoc Prof Li Mingjiang at NTU's RSIS said the TikTok issue provides an important lesson for China and the US: even when dealing with sensitive national security-related investment issues, the two sides are not completely at an impasse.
