China-Canada relations improve but Canada must avoid provoking US

China-Canada relations appear to be warming, as Chinese Premier Li Qiang and visiting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney signalled a shared interest in boosting trade, investment, and support for multilateralism. However, NTU Assoc Prof Dylan Loh and ISEAS senior fellow Li Liangfu noted that a single visit cannot undo the damage from years of strained ties, though the leaders’ statements and newly signed MOUs indicate willingness on both sides to resolve issues and reopen channels of communication.
