CCE lesson on Israel-Hamas conflict not meant to teach history or apportion blame: Chan Chun Sing
NTU Expert Comment: TODAY Online (off Reuters) - Mothership, 26 February 2024
According to Education Minister Chan Chun Sing, the coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Ministry of Education's Character and Citizenship Education curriculum is not meant to be a history lesson. It is also not an exercise to apportion blame on one party or another, he added in an interview with CNA. The interview followed the release of a statement by MOE in response to parents who were upset by how the issue was framed during CCE lessons. Walid Jumblatt Abdullah, an assistant professor at the NTU SSS, also scrutinised the lesson slides. Walid highlighted the need for factual accuracy, adding that omitting history before Oct 7 would be "intellectually dishonest". This includes the mention of the occupation of Palestine since 1967, which Singapore opposes, said Walid.
