Caregivers of dementia patients 30 times more likely to have a stroke: NTU survey

Increased support is being demanded by caregivers of dementia patients following research revealing a 30-fold higher likelihood of experiencing a stroke due to stress. Dr Andy Ho, the Head of the Psychology Programme at NTU and Research Director at NTU’s palliative care centre emphasized that caregivers endure persistent stress, leading to the continuous release of stress hormones. In the short term, this can manifest as symptoms like headaches and migraines, but in the long run, it weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to chronic conditions and diseases. Dr. Ho underscored that the study indicates a 27 to 30 times greater risk of stroke for those facing prolonged stress.
