Retailers, importers warn beverage container recycling scheme may push up drink prices

Prices of bottled and canned drinks in Singapore could soon rise as much as between 25 cents and 60 cents, when the Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) kicks in from April. BCRS said it has organised online workshops to educate producers about the scheme. NTU Economics Asst Prof Chua Yeow Hwee, who specialises in consumer behaviour, said the deposit could help Singapore move the needle from its low plastic recycling rate, as consumers, importers and suppliers are all in the same system. “Getting everyone in the ecosystem will put everyone on the same page. The goal here is to deliver lasting impact for Singapore. The government incentivising people through a monetary handouts is not going to be sustainable,” he said.
